Link Profile Audit - Broken Links & External Link Analysis

Analyze outbound links, broken links, and external domain references.

Your website's internal and external link structure significantly impacts both user experience and search engine optimization. Internal links help users navigate your site and distribute page authority. External links provide value to users by connecting them to relevant resources while also signaling trust and credibility to search engines.

Our Link Profile audit analyzes your website's outbound links including total link counts, internal vs external balance, broken or empty links, and security attributes. We check for common issues like missing rel="noopener" on external links, HTTP (insecure) external links, and invalid anchor links. A well-structured link profile improves navigation, user experience, and SEO performance.

Note: This audit focuses on outbound links (links on your page). Backlink analysis (links from other sites to yours) requires specialized tools like Ahrefs or Moz and is not included in this audit.

Why Link Quality & Broken Links Matter for SEO

1
User Navigation

Internal links are the backbone of site navigation. They help users discover related content, navigate between sections, and find what they need. A well-structured internal linking strategy keeps users engaged longer and reduces bounce rates. Too few links mean poor navigation; too many can overwhelm and confuse visitors.

2
PageRank Distribution

Internal links distribute page authority (PageRank) throughout your site. When you link from a high-authority page to another page, some of that authority transfers. Strategic internal linking helps important pages rank better. However, excessive external links can "leak" authority to other sites instead of keeping it on your domain.

3
Security and Trust

Links opening in new tabs without proper security attributes (rel="noopener noreferrer") can expose your site to tabnabbing attacks. External links using HTTP instead of HTTPS may trigger browser security warnings. These issues hurt user trust and can affect your site's reputation.

4
SEO Health

Search engines follow links to discover and index content. Broken links (404 errors) frustrate both users and search engine crawlers, wasting crawl budget. Invalid anchor links (pointing to non-existent page sections) create poor user experience and may indicate technical issues with your site.

Internal & External Links We Analyze

Total Link Count
Medium

We count all links on your page and evaluate if the total falls within a healthy range. The optimal range is 50-150 links per page. Fewer than 10 links suggests poor navigation, while more than 300 links can dilute PageRank and create a cluttered experience.

Internal vs External Balance
Medium

We analyze the ratio of internal links (to your own site) vs external links (to other sites). A healthy page typically has more internal links than external. If external links significantly outnumber internal links, you may be sending too much authority to other sites.

Empty or Broken Links
High

We detect links with empty href attributes, placeholder links (href="#"), or invalid URLs. These broken links frustrate users, waste crawl budget, and look unprofessional. We count these issues and flag pages with multiple broken links as critical.

Missing noopener/noreferrer
High

External links that open in new tabs (target="_blank") without rel="noopener noreferrer" create security vulnerabilities. The linked page can access your page's window object and potentially redirect users to phishing sites (tabnabbing attack).

Insecure External Links (HTTP)
Medium

We identify external links pointing to HTTP (non-secure) URLs instead of HTTPS. Modern browsers may warn users about insecure connections, and linking to HTTP sites can negatively impact perceived trustworthiness.

Invalid Anchor Links
Medium

We check anchor links (href="#section-id") to verify they point to actual elements on the page. Clicking an anchor link that goes nowhere frustrates users and may indicate outdated or broken page structure.

How to Fix Broken Links & Optimize Link Profile

1
Fix Broken and Empty Links
  • Review all links flagged as empty or broken. Update href attributes with valid URLs.
  • Remove placeholder links (href="#") unless they serve a valid JavaScript purpose.
  • For links to external resources that no longer exist, find updated URLs or remove the links.
  • Use a link checker tool regularly to catch new broken links as your site evolves.
2
Add Security Attributes
  • Add rel="noopener noreferrer" to all external links that use target="_blank".
  • If using a CMS or framework, configure it to automatically add these attributes to external links.
  • For React: <a href="url" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
  • For HTML: <a href="url" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
3
Update HTTP Links to HTTPS
  • Review external links pointing to HTTP URLs.
  • Check if the destination site now supports HTTPS and update the URL.
  • If the site doesn't support HTTPS, consider whether linking to it is necessary.
  • Use browser developer tools to identify mixed content warnings caused by HTTP links.
4
Optimize Internal Linking
  • Ensure every page has clear navigation links to main sections of your site.
  • Link contextually from content to related pages using descriptive anchor text.
  • Avoid orphan pages (pages with no internal links pointing to them).
  • Review your link ratio - if external links significantly exceed internal, consider adding more internal navigation.
5
Fix Invalid Anchor Links
  • Review anchor links and verify the target ID exists on the page.
  • Check for typos in anchor href values vs actual element IDs.
  • After page updates, verify that referenced section IDs still exist.
  • Consider removing anchor links to sections that have been deleted or restructured.
